Brookline's Town Meeting is a representative legislative body that serves as the town's primary policymaking authority, functioning in place of an open town meeting due to the community's size. The town is divided into 17 precincts, each of which elects 15 Town Meeting Members (TMMs). Members serve three-year terms that are staggered, so roughly one-third of each precinct's seats are up for election each year, ensuring continuity while allowing for regular voter input. Elections are nonpartisan and typically coincide with the annual town election, with candidates running within their own precincts.
